Rare Books, in Your Hands
Old Icelandic Books offers the only place in Iceland where guests can handle rare antiquarian books and manuscripts. The private exhibition is for up to six guests, providing access to one of the country’s most remarkable collections.
Guests are invited to handle and browse exceptionally rare Icelandic volumes under the guidance of Eyþór, the Guardian of the Books, who instructs on how to care for volumes that are several centuries old.
The exhibition is personally guided by Eyþór, who presents the historical context, provenance, and global influence of these works, explaining how Icelandic texts and ideas travelled far beyond the island of ice and fire and left a lasting mark on European and world history.
What to Expect
Centuries of Icelandic Story
Guests receive instruction in the handling of rare books and manuscripts. Eyþór explains how to hold individual volumes and how to turn pages made primarily from cotton-based paper.
The earliest printed editions of the world-renowned Icelandic Sagas and other Norse legendary tales are presented to guests, works that laid the foundation for the world’s knowledge and understanding of the Viking Age.
Guests are also introduced to the books behind Iceland’s Age of Enlightenment, alongside the country’s oldest bibles and religious texts from other lands.
This is not a museum visit.
Each exhibition is tailored to the guests present. With a small number of visitors per session, the experience keeps its depth and intimacy, where real engagement and scholarly context are given the space they deserve.
It is something that stays with you.

Recent Reviews
“This was a one-of-a-kind experience! Eyþór shared precious books, maps, and manuscript pages from his collection, explaining their significance and how he restores them. We were especially interested in the sagas, and we did not leave disappointed! Being able to touch and examine these precious works was truly incredible. Thank you!!!”

We got to see and to hold some amazing old texts, including a first edition of the saga of Viga Glum from 1785, Njal’s saga from 1772, and many others. The owner is really knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and clearly loves sharing his experiences with others. Highly recommended.”
